A Story from the Arena continued...
. . .They looked around at the four animals in the
arena to choose from. They chose one that had been curious towards them, and seemed
"friendly". The horse, however, did not cooperate and after 15 minutes of trying to coax this
horse through the course, the women gave up. One of the women, a social worker at a residential
facility for troubled youth, burst into quiet tears. Everyone was silent as she cried for a solid 5
minutes. Even the horses were completely still. The weeping woman kept glancing over at a
black horse. He had been standing quietly by at the back of the arena watching the whole scene.
The horse's head was hanging low, and his gaze was fixed on the group of women.
When the sobbing woman was able to talk through her emotional state, she said that she just
couldn’t get “that other horse” out of her mind. One of the session facilitators asked what she
thought it was that was keeping that horse in her attention. The woman replied, “I can’t help
thinking how that horse reminds me of all the children I have not been able to help in my job; all
the children I probably overlooked.” Amazingly, “that other horse” began to move. He walked to
the start of the obstacle course that the other horse had refused to navigate. “Wow, look at that…”
the crying woman said. The facilitator asked if she would like to try to walk this horse through the
course. She and the other two women successfully navigated this new horse through the course
they'd made. <-- Back To Start
